US President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Pam Bondi, a veteran prosecutor and former Florida attorney general, as his new pick for attorney general. This comes after Matt Gaetz withdrew his name from consideration.
Bondi, 59, has a long history in law enforcement and has been a loyal ally to Trump, defending him during his first Senate impeachment trial. Trump praised Bondi’s track record, saying she was “very tough on violent criminals” and made Florida’s streets safer.
Bondi’s nomination is seen as a safer choice for Trump, as she is likely to face less opposition from senators. If confirmed, she will become the country’s chief law enforcement officer, overseeing the justice department’s 115,000 employees and $45bn budget.
As attorney general, Bondi would play a key role in implementing Trump’s plans for the department, including ending “weaponised government” and restoring Americans’ faith in the justice system. However, her nomination has also raised concerns, given her vocal criticism of the criminal cases brought against Trump and her role in promoting false claims of voter fraud
