Nigeria’s Ministry of Defence has announced plans to bolster its defence relationship with Germany, courtesy of the German Technical Advisory Group’s (GTAG) new project initiatives. This development was revealed during a meeting between Ibrahim Kana, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, and a high-level delegation from GTAG, led by Mr. Marcus Ohm, in Abuja.
Key Takeaways: Enhanced Cooperation: The partnership aims to modernize the Nigerian Armed Forces through improved security intelligence sharing, equipment upgrades, and capacity building.
Sustainability: Nigerian personnel will be involved in project planning and execution to ensure long-term success.
Mutual Benefits: Both nations are committed to transparency, dedication, and enhanced collaboration.
A statement signed by Henshaw Ogubike, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry said Mr. Kana expressed satisfaction with the new project circle, promising to sustain it. He highlighted Nigeria’s progress since GTAG’s last visit, including the development of a framework for proper coordination, planning, and execution of projects.
Germany has been a significant partner for Nigeria, with bilateral relations encompassing economic cooperation, particularly in the energy sector. Nigeria is Germany’s second-largest trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa.
The two nations have also collaborated on training and capacity-building initiatives.
Mr. Ohm pledged Germany’s commitment to delivering successful projects, stating, “The project is going in the right direction.” This renewed partnership is expected to further strengthen defence ties between Nigeria and Germany.
