Nigeria’s NNPC Calls for Global Cooperation in Decarbonization Efforts

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd. has urged for increased collaboration and transparency among stakeholders in the global energy industry to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Mele Kyari, Group CEO of NNPC Ltd., made this call at the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition & Conference (#ADIPEC2024).

Decarbonization Challenges in Africa

Africa faces the dual challenge of decarbonization and energy poverty. To address this, Nigeria has made two significant policy shifts: declaring the decade of gas as a transition fuel and removing fuel subsidies. These policies drive Nigeria’s decarbonization agenda.

Key Objectives

  • Achieving Gas Flare-out by 2030: Nigeria aims to utilize gas for automotive and power generation.
  • Access to Capital: Kyari emphasized the need for global south countries to access capital to address their energy challenges.
  • Level Playing Field: The Oil & Gas Decarbonisation Charter (OGDC) must provide a fair platform for all parties.

Collaboration and Progress

Mr. Kyari praised the “phenomenal” level of collaboration in decarbonization efforts, citing TotalEnergies’ partnership with NNPC Ltd. on methane measurement and detection technology. The ADIPEC conference brings together over 180,000 energy professionals to accelerate innovation and transformation.

As Nigeria’s largest energy company, NNPC Ltd. is committed to sustainable and socially responsible practices. Mr. Kyari’s call for cooperation underscores the importance of collective action in addressing global energy challenges.
