Nigerian Universities Slip Down Global Rankings

A worrying trend has emerged as Nigeria’s representation in the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) world universities ranking continues to dwindle. For the third consecutive year, the number of Nigerian universities in the top 1,000 has decreased.

2025 Rankings: Covenant University Sole Representative

Covenant University remains the only Nigerian institution in the top 1,000, maintaining its stance since 2019. Other notable universities, including Ahmadu Bello University, Landmark University, University of Ibadan, and University of Lagos, ranked between 1001-1200.

Global Leaders Hold Steady

Oxford University retains its top spot for the tenth year, with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University securing second and third places, respectively.

Nigeria’s Decline Sparks Concern

Last year, two Nigerian universities made the cut. In 2023, three universities were ranked. This steady decline raises alarm about the country’s higher education sector.

Ranking Methodology

THE’s rankings are based on 18 performance indicators across five areas:

  1. Teaching (29.5%)
  2. Research environment (29%)
  3. Research quality (30%)
  4. International outlook (7.5%)
  5. Industry (4%)
