Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Mohammed Abubakar, has reiterated the country’s dedication to supporting the United Nations’ initiatives in maintaining global peace and security. Speaking at the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York, Mr. Abubakar emphasized Nigeria’s significant contributions to international peace and security since its first engagement in Congo in 1960.
Nigeria’s Contributions to Global Peace
Nigeria has provided troops, financial support, logistics, and civilian experts to various African countries, including:
- Guinea Bissau
- Sierra Leone
- Liberia
- Mali
- Côte d’Ivoire
The Minister highlighted Nigeria’s crucial role in regional security and stability in West Africa and the Sahel region.
Call for UN Security Council Reform
The Minister urged the United Nations Security Council to provide permanent representation for Africa, emphasizing its importance for global peace, inclusivity, and security.
Addressing Emerging Security Threats
He stressed the need for comprehensive strategies to prevent and address emerging security threats, including:
- Stopping illegal financial flows
- Preventing kidnapping and banditry
- Stemming illicit arms and light weapons flow
“We urge the international community to renew efforts to address these security challenges,” the Minister said.
This reaffirmation of commitment comes as Nigeria continues to play a vital role in maintaining international peace and security.
