Nigeria’s Electoral Commission Releases Guidelines for Recalling Elected Officials

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled revised regulations and guidelines for recalling members of the National Assembly, State Houses of Assembly, and Area Councils in the Federal Capital Territory.

This move comes as the commission prepares for the Edo State Governorship election on September 21, 2024.

Recall Process Clarified

INEC emphasized that the recall process is initiated by voters in a constituency, not by the commission itself. To recall an elected official, a petition signed by over 50% of registered voters in the constituency must be submitted to the INEC chairman, followed by verification.

Key Regulations and Guidelines

The 10-page document outlining the recall procedure is now available on INEC’s website and social media platforms. Constituents interested in recalling their elected representatives are urged to follow these guidelines when preparing and submitting petitions.

Key Provisions:

  • Initiation: Recall process initiated by voters in a constituency
  • Petition Requirements: Signed by over 50% of registered voters
  • Verification: INEC to verify petitions before proceeding
  • Constitutional Basis: Sections 69, 110, and 160 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Sections 2(c) and 113 of the Electoral Act, 2022

By releasing these guidelines, INEC aims to ensure transparency and clarity in the recall process, empowering Nigerian voters to hold their elected officials accountable.
