Nigerians living abroad are making significant contributions to their home country, with annual remittances totalling approximately $20 billion, accounting for 6.1% of Nigeria’s GDP.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), revealed this at the Africa Diaspora Day on the Hill, part of the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference.
“The Nigerian diaspora is a vital partner in our nation’s growth, achieving impressive feats across various sectors worldwide,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.
NiDCOM’s initiatives to enhance diaspora engagement include:
- National Diaspora Policy
- Diaspora Data Mapping/Registration Portal
- Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit (NDIS)
- Diaspora Mortgage Scheme
Dabiri-Erewa met with influential figures, including Gina Paige and Sheila Walker, to strengthen US-Africa-Caribbean ties.
The event, “The Rise of Global Africa,” aimed to foster stronger economic and political relationships between Africa, the Caribbean, and the US through the global African diaspora.
