Kaduna, Nigeria – Police in Nigeria’s Kaduna State have arrested a man with a large sum of cash, suspected to be for vote-buying ahead of Saturday’s by-elections. The arrest was made at a hotel in the early hours of the morning.

The suspect, identified as Shehu Patangi, was apprehended by police and Department of State Services (DSS) operatives with N25,963,000 (approximately £21,500). According to a police spokesperson, a preliminary investigation indicates the money was intended to compromise the integrity of the electoral process. The spokesperson also stated that the suspect had confessed to the crime.

Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, issued a strong warning, saying that anyone, regardless of their status, who attempts to undermine the elections through vote-buying, violence, or thuggery will face prosecution. The police command has deployed personnel to polling units and other strategic locations across the state to ensure the polls are peaceful.
