Nigerian Officials Arrested Over Alleged Vote-Buying Ahead of By-Election

Abeokuta, Nigeria – Security forces in Nigeria’s Ogun State have arrested several individuals, including two people suspected of being staff members of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on suspicion of vote-buying ahead of a local by-election.

The arrests were made at a hotel in Iperu-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area. A viral video shows the two alleged INEC officials, a man and a woman, being questioned by security agents while a large amount of money is seen on the floor. A politician and other individuals, reportedly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), were also taken into custody.

The security officer in the video claims that intelligence had revealed the INEC staff were given a large sum of money by political operatives to influence the outcome of Saturday’s by-election.
