Abuja, Nigeria – Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the construction of six new modern bus terminals at a cost of over N142 billion (£118 million). The terminals will be located in each of the country’s six geopolitical zones in a bid to improve public transport infrastructure and security.
According to the Minister of Transportation, Senator Sa’idu Ahmed Alkali, the contract has been awarded to Planet Project Limited. The terminals will be built in Abeokuta (South-West), Gombe (North-East), Kano (North-West), Lokoja (North-Central), Onitsha (South-East), and Ewu in Edo State (South-South).
The minister described the project as a first-of-its-kind direct intervention in road transport infrastructure by the federal government. He stated that the lack of proper bus terminals has contributed to increased crime, road accidents, and the proliferation of weapons along major highways.
The initiative aims to improve road safety, enhance passenger comfort, and boost economic activity in the selected regions. The minister said the locations were chosen for their economic viability.
