Abuja, Nigeria – Police in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, have arrested four people, including two sisters, for allegedly faking a kidnapping to extort their father. The suspects reportedly demanded a N5 million ransom (approximately $6,300 USD).
The incident began on July 18 when Mr. Innocent, a resident of the Jikwoyi area, reported his 16-year-old daughter, Lead Way Innocent, missing after she failed to return from an examination. He later received a phone call demanding a ransom for her release.
According to a statement from the FCT Police Command, a discreet investigation was launched, which led officers to a residence in Jikwoyi where they found Lead Way with a woman identified as Mrs. Tina Mayowa. Authorities said there were “no signs of distress” from the girl.
Further investigation led to the arrest of Lead Way’s older sister, Joy Innocent, and her boyfriend, Mayowa Adedeji. Police revealed that Joy, in collaboration with her boyfriend, allegedly orchestrated the kidnapping scheme. It was also confirmed that Lead Way was an active participant in the plot, feigning her abduction while her parents scrambled to raise the ransom.
All four suspects have confessed to the crime and are currently in police custody. They are expected to be charged in court once the investigation is concluded.
