Nigeria’s Police Commission Seeks Drug Tests for Recruits with NDLEA Support

ABUJA, NIGERIA – Nigeria’s Police Service Commission (PSC) has sought the assistance of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to conduct drug integrity tests for police recruits. The aim is to ensure that only individuals with the “right frame of mind” are admitted into police training colleges across the country.

The Chairman of the PSC, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hashimu Argungu (rtd), made the request on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, during a courtesy visit to the NDLEA’s National Headquarters in Abuja, where he met with the agency’s Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd).

Argungu emphasised the importance of thorough screening in recruitment processes to produce high-quality personnel. “If the process and procedures were followed wrongly, the end result or product is going to be bad,” he stated. He highlighted the danger of “churning out and putting arms in the hands of people already dependent on illicit drugs,” explaining that with the decentralisation of the screening exercise to various states, the PSC requires NDLEA’s assistance in identifying drug users, given the agency’s presence in every state.

In response, General Marwa affirmed the NDLEA’s readiness to collaborate. According to a statement by Femi Babafemi, Director of Media & Advocacy at NDLEA Headquarters, Marwa noted that the drug scourge affects all aspects of national life and fuels security challenges. He assured the PSC that NDLEA commands across the country are equipped with “high quality test kits” capable of detecting various attempts to tamper with urine samples, pledging full support for the initiative.
