Nigeria: Retired Police Officers Protest Pension Scheme in Abuja

ABUJA, NIGERIA – A group of retired Nigerian police officers staged a protest at the entrance of the National Assembly in Abuja on Monday, demanding their removal from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). The demonstration took place amidst rainfall, with elderly ex-personnel holding placards and chanting solidarity songs.

The protesters argue that the CPS is “exploitative and unjust,” claiming it has impoverished them after years of service. Retired Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Manir Lawal, 67, stated, “We are here to ask the government to remove us from the CPS. We have served this country faithfully and deserve to retire in dignity.”

Despite the inclement weather, the retirees maintained their demonstration, vowing to remain until their concerns are addressed by the National Assembly leadership. Security operatives were present, monitoring the protest to ensure law and order.
