Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), a major financial institution in Nigeria, has announced an increase in its fee for SMS transaction alerts. The new charge will rise from 4 Naira to 6 Naira per message, effective from Thursday, May 1st, 2025.
In a notification sent to customers on Wednesday, the bank stated that the price adjustment was a direct consequence of increased charges imposed by telecommunication service providers. “This adjustment is due to a recent increase in telecom rates as communicated by the telecommunication service providers,” the bank explained.
GTB highlighted the importance of SMS alerts in enabling customers to closely monitor their account activity and promptly identify any suspicious transactions. “Kindly note that transaction alerts are important and help you keep track and stay in control of activities on your account,” the bank’s message read.
However, recognising that some customers may prefer alternative notification methods, Guaranty Trust Bank has also provided an option to opt out of receiving SMS alerts. Customers wishing to do so can update their preferences by completing a transaction alert form available on the bank’s website and submitting it via email.
For customers seeking further clarification or assistance, the bank has advised them to contact its customer service helplines. The increase in SMS alert fees by GTB is likely to be noted by its substantial customer base in Nigeria.
