Despite concerns raised by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, the Presidency has assured Nigerians that the country is making significant strides under President Bola Tinubu. In a statement issued on Monday, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, acknowledged that governance challenges persist, but highlighted progress in security, economic stability, and youth empowerment.
Mr. Onanuga claimed that Nigeria is more secure today than it was in 2023, with over 8,000 criminals eliminated and over 10,000 Nigerians rescued in the last two years. He attributed this improvement to the efforts of the military and security agencies. As a result, farmers have returned to their lands, leading to increased food production and lower commodity prices.
Regarding economic concerns, Mr. Onanuga stated that Tinubu’s administration has stabilized the economy, improved Nigeria’s financial standing, and increased local refining capacity. He cited improvements in the balance of trade, foreign reserves, inflation, and the value of the naira.
The Presidency also emphasized initiatives aimed at job creation and youth empowerment, expected to generate over 10 million new jobs. Mr. Onanuga noted that the government has increased spending on infrastructure, healthcare, education, and security, with the N54.9 trillion 2025 budget being a major step towards economic revitalization.
However, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria has expressed concerns about the nation’s challenges, including unemployment, insecurity, poverty, and corruption. Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru stated that Tinubu’s economic reforms have led to soaring inflation, pushing millions of Nigerians into poverty.
