Nigeria’s Information Minister Urges Collective Efforts to Protect Civic Space, Media Freedom

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called for collective efforts to protect Nigeria’s civic space and promote media freedom.

Speaking at the 2024 Annual General Congress of the International Press Institute Nigeria, Mr. Idris emphasized the importance of a free press in a democratic society. He noted that Nigeria has enjoyed a relatively free media space since the return of democracy in 1999.

Minister Idris also highlighted the need for responsibility to accompany freedom, saying that the media must acknowledge its immense power in shaping public opinion and the permanent public record.

The Minister also spoke about the government’s commitment to expanding media freedom and protecting Nigeria’s civic space. He cited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s emphasis on reforming and strengthening the judiciary as proof of this commitment.

He concluded by stressing the need for a civil civic space, where diverse views and opinions can coexist, and where institutions can be held accountable.
