The African Centre for Leadership Strategy and Development (Centre LSD) has partnered with the Ministry of Justice and Public Order, Benue State, to onboard the state onto the Nigerian Sexual Offenders Register. This initiative is part of the Side-by-Side Movement for Gender Justice scale-up project.
In addition to onboarding Benue State, Centre LSD is also providing capacity-building training to the Humanitarian Tracking and Monitoring Team and the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Prevention, Advocacy, and Response Committee in Benue State.
According to a press statement by Essien Nyong, the project focal person for the Side-by-Side Movement for Gender Justice at Centre LSD, these efforts are crucial in strengthening the fight against gender-based violence in Benue. The trained stakeholders will be responsible for managing the state’s Sexual Offenders Register, which is currently being developed and hosted with the support of Centre LSD.
The capacity-building sessions aim to enhance the knowledge and skills of the Humanitarian Tracking and Monitoring Team and the SGBV Prevention, Advocacy, and Response Committee in managing the Sexual Offenders Register. This training will also assist in monitoring cases of humanitarian trafficking and addressing issues related to SGBV within the state.
Mr. Nyong noted that the Side-by-Side Movement for Gender Justice is a global initiative that brings together faith and traditional leaders, along with people of faith, as advocates for gender justice. The movement has been actively working since 2018 to promote these goals.
