The International Press Centre (IPC) has expressed concerns over the reluctance of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to comply with Freedom of Information (FOI) requests.
Challenges Persist
IPC Executive Director Lanre Arogundade stated this during a courtesy visit to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Beatrice Jeddy-Agba. Arogundade cited annual reports from the Attorney General’s office, highlighting widespread non-compliance.
Collaboration Sought
Mr. Arogundade emphasized the need for partnerships to address challenges and ensure total compliance. The IPC aims to work with CEOs and desk officers of MDAs to enhance understanding and cooperation.
FOI Awards Initiative
Mr. Arogundade announced plans to establish Freedom of Information Awards in 2025, saying, “The idea is to encourage and incentivize MDAs to improve compliance… Improved access to information strengthens our democracy.”
Accessibility Concerns
Jake Epelle, TAF Africa Founder, appealed for FOI documents to be made accessible to persons with disabilities, suggesting audio, large print, and sign language interpretations.
FOI Provisions
Deputy Director in charge of the FOI, Godwin Omamegbe acknowledged Section 3’s provisions for persons with disabilities, allowing third-party assistance and oral requests.
He pledged broader collaboration to address accessibility concerns.
