Eight young Nigerian girls, aged 15-22, have been rescued from human trafficking in Ghana and returned home, thanks to the tireless efforts of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).
The girls, hailing from various states including Ebonyi, Akwa-Ibom, Imo, Plateau, and Cross River, were lured to Ghana with false promises of employment but were instead forced into sexual exploitation.
NiDCOM Chairman/CEO, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, praised the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her unwavering support in facilitating the girls’ return. Dabiri-Erewa also acknowledged the crucial role of Chief Callistus Elozieuwa, President of Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Ghana Chapter, the Nigerian embassy in Ghana, and the Interpol Units of Nigeria and Ghana.
Key Developments:-
Rescue Efforts: The girls have been handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for safe accommodation, rehabilitation, and reintegration with their families
Trafficker Convicted_: 28-year-old Nigerian, Ms. Favour Ugwu, was arrested and jailed for eight years in Ghana for human trafficking.
Ongoing Mission: NiDCOM vows to continue combating human trafficking, protecting Nigerian citizens’ rights both at home and abroad, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
This breakthrough underscores the Nigerian government’s commitment to tackling human trafficking and ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.
