Nigeria’s Correctional Service Suspends Senior Officers Amid Bribery Allegations

The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board has suspended four senior officers, including two from the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre in Lagos, due to allegations of bribery and misconduct.

The suspensions come after a voice note shared by Martins Otse, aka VeryDarkMan, claimed that Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, was allowed to serve his six-month sentence in a private apartment.

Suspended Officers:

  • Michael Anugwa, Deputy Controller of Corrections, Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre, Lagos
  • Sikiru Adekunle, Deputy Controller of Corrections, Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre, Lagos
  • Ogbule Obinna, ASC II, Medium Security Custodial Centre, Afikpo, Ebonyi State
  • Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu, Deputy Controller of Corrections, Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje-Abuja

The Nigerian Bar Association has called for an independent investigation into the allegations, emphasizing that officers found culpable must be dismissed and prosecuted. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has also launched an investigation into the bribery allegations.

The suspension of these officers aims to facilitate a thorough investigation into the allegations, with the outcome to be made public upon conclusion
