Nigerian Army Discharges Female Soldier Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations

The Nigerian Army has discharged Private Ruth Ogunleye, a female soldier who accused senior officer Colonel I.B. Abdulkareem of sexual harassment. Ogunleye made the allegations on her TikTok page in January 2024, claiming Abdulkareem, Colonel G.S. Ogor, and Brigadier General I.B. Solebo made her life unbearable.

An investigation was conducted by the Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police, which concluded that Abdulkareem did not commit the alleged offences. However, medical reports revealed Ogunleye suffered from a condition rendering her medically vulnerable.

Key Findings:

  • Investigation Outcome: No evidence of sexual harassment by Colonel I.B. Abdulkareem
  • Medical Evaluation: Ogunleye’s condition made her medically vulnerable
  • Discharge Decision: Based on medical grounds, not disciplinary action

Benefits and Compensation:

  • 50% monthly pension for life, despite not serving the requisite 10 years
  • Terminal Leave Allowance and Terminal Packing Allowance paid
  • Contributions to Nigerian Army Welfare Insurance Scheme and Benevolent Fund paid
  • Security Debarment Allowance paid for 5 years and 54 days of service.

The Nigerian Army prioritized Ogunleye’s health, opting for compassion and leniency over disciplinary action
