The United States Mission in Nigeria has praised the people of Edo State for conducting a largely peaceful gubernatorial election on September 21.
In a statement, US Ambassador Richard Mills Jr. commended Governor Godwin Obaseki’s appeal for peace and urged all stakeholders, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to respect established electoral processes and legal procedures for challenging results.
Transparency and due process are essential for maintaining public trust in Nigeria’s democratic system, Ambassador Mills emphasized. He reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting free, fair, transparent, and credible elections in Nigeria and pledged to continue monitoring the situation closely.
This statement comes after the Edo State governorship election, which saw the candidate of the APC emerging victorious. The election was widely observed to be peaceful, with minimal incidents of violence reported.
The US Mission’s endorsement is a significant boost to Nigeria’s democratic credentials, highlighting the country’s progress in conducting peaceful elections. As Nigeria continues to navigate its electoral landscape, international support and observation remain crucial in ensuring the integrity of its democratic processes
