Edo State Governorship Election: APC’s Monday Okpebholo Declared Winner

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has been declared the winner of the Edo State governorship election.

Prof. Faruk Kuta, the Returning Officer, announced Okpebholo’s victory at the collation centre in Benin City, the state capital, on Sunday.

Election Results

Okpebholo secured 291,667 votes, defeating his main challenger, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 247,274 votes. Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party finished third with 22,763 votes.

Breakdown of Results

The election results from the 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) showed:

• APC won in Akoko Edo, Egor, Etsako Central, Etsako East, Etsako West, Owan East, Owan West, and Ovia North-East LGAs
• PDP won in Esan Central, Esan North-East, Esan South-East, Esan West, Ikpoba-Okha, Oredo, Orhionmwon, and Uhunmwonde LGAs

Reaction

Prof. Kuta declared, “That Okpebholo, having satisfied the requirement of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.”

The APC victory marks a significant win in the state, traditionally divided between the APC-stronghold in Edo North and PDP-dominated Edo Central and Edo South.
