Nigeria to Provide Strategic Sealift Capacity to African Union Commission

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has announced that the country will provide strategic SEALIFT capacity generation to the African Union Commission (AUC). This move, according to him demonstrates Nigeria’s military capabilities and capacity to contribute significantly to the movement of military equipment, heavy hardware, relief materials, and troops within the continent and beyond.

According to a statement signed by Henshaw Ogubike, Director of Information and Public Relations, Mr. Matawalle made this announcement during a meeting with the Inter-Ministerial Committee reviewing the Memorandum of Understanding on African Union Strategic Sealift capacity. The Minister emphasized Nigeria’s leadership role in commanding and controlling the asset, as well as providing escort services. He commended the committee’s efforts and expressed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to projecting Nigeria’s efforts in African Union peace and security initiatives.

The Inter-Ministerial Committee, comprising representatives from various ministries and agencies, briefed the Minister on the reviewed draft Memorandum of Understanding and Standard Operating Procedure between Nigeria and the AUC.

The committee’s leader, Ambassador Innocent Iwejuo, thanked the Minister for his support and briefed him on the progress of work done on the MoU and the forthcoming visit of AUC representatives to Nigeria.
