Nigeria Prison Service Responds to Flooding Crisis in Maiduguri

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) is taking emergency measures to manage the fallout from severe flooding at its Medium Security Custodial Centre in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The flooding, caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam, has disrupted operations and posed a threat to the facility. In response, the NCoS has launched an emergency plan, which includes evacuating inmates to safer facilities and coordinating with security and emergency agencies for support.

NCoS spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, said officials are working diligently to secure the safe transfer of inmates and maintain order during this challenging period.

The agency has acknowledged the support from the Presidency and Vice President Kashim Shettima’s visit to Maiduguri, which has helped assess the situation.

The NCoS has pledged to keep the public informed with ongoing updates and remains committed to ensuring safety and maintaining order.

The severe flooding in Maiduguri has left much of the city underwater, with residents comparing it to the devastating 1994 floods. Hundreds of families have lost their homes, forcing many to spend the night outdoors.
