The Governor of Ondo State in Southwest Nigeria, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has launched a mass metering programme across the state’s 18 local government areas. The initiative, branded as ”O’Datiwa Meters”, aims to improve access to electricity and eliminate arbitrary and inflated electricity bills.
At the inauguration in Akure, the state capital, Governor Aiyedatiwa stated that the programme aligns with his commitment to reform the power sector and ensure a transparent, fair, and efficient electricity supply system.
“The O’Datiwa Meter Programme marks a crucial step in our commitment to providing every citizen with a reliable and equitable electricity billing system,” he said.
The governor highlighted that the programme would remove uncertainties and discrepancies in the billing process, ensuring residents pay only for the energy they consume.
The state government has subsidized the meters to address energy theft and inefficient billing practices. Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasized that the initiative represents a promise to the people that their hard-earned money will be spent justly.
The launch comes as the state takes control of electricity oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission. Governor Aiyedatiwa announced plans for the state to venture into power generation, transmission, and distribution, calling on distribution and generation companies to collaborate with the state.
“Our state is open to investors in all areas of power generation, transmission, and distribution. Together, we can ensure that every community in Ondo State is adequately powered,” he said.
