African Youth Feel Forced to Flee Due to Corruption

A staggering 60% of African youth are considering leaving their home countries due to unchecked corruption, a new poll reveals.

Corruption Seen as Major Hurdle

The survey of over 5,600 youngsters in 16 countries found that corruption is viewed as the single greatest obstacle to achieving their potential and a better life.

Governments Accused of Inaction

The Johannesburg-based Ichikowitz Family Foundation, which commissioned the poll, said most respondents felt their governments were not doing enough to address corruption, leading to a desire to emigrate.

North America Top Destination

The 2024 African Youth Survey found that North America was the top pick for emigration, followed by Western European countries.

Afro-Pessimism Persists

Despite a modest rise in “Afro-optimism,” more than half of those polled believed Africa was headed in the wrong direction.

Call for Tougher Sanctions

Respondents demanded tougher sanctions against corrupt politicians, including banning them from office, and a different form of government.

Democracy and Governance

While two-thirds believed in democracy, around 60% favored an “African-infused” form, and nearly one in three thought non-democratic systems could be preferable under certain circumstances.

Foreign Influence

Most respondents saw foreign influence as an issue, citing concerns about exploitation by foreign companies, particularly in the mining sector.

Perceptions of Global Powers

A large majority viewed China’s influence positively, while perceptions of Russian influence increased, notably in Malawi and South Africa.

US Election Impact

Most respondents believed a Donald Trump victory in the US presidential elections would be worse for Africa than a win by Kamala Harris.

The African Youth Survey aims to give voice to Africa’s youth and provide valuable data to governments, NGOs, and investors.

Africa’s Youthful Population

Africa has the world’s youngest and fastest-growing population, with nearly 420 million youth aged 15-35, one-third of whom are unemployed.
