A prominent media group in Nigeria has urged citizens to embrace unity and participate actively in upcoming democratic processes as the West African nation marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
In an anniversary statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, the Association of Corporate Online Editors (ACOE) called on Nigerians at home and across the diaspora to reflect on the country’s journey since gaining independence from British rule in 1960.
ACOE Chairman Sola Akingboye emphasized that the anniversary should serve as a moment for national renewal, encouraging citizens to look past ethnic, religious, and political divides.”Nigeria’s diversity should be regarded as a source of strength and an opportunity to build a more inclusive and prosperous nation,” Akingboye said, urging the public to stay committed to peaceful coexistence. With attention turning toward the country’s next political cycle, the online publishers’ body highlighted the crucial role of voters in shaping the nation’s future ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
Mr. Akingboye appealed to political leaders, civil society organizations, and media outlets to foster issue-based political debate while actively discouraging hate speech, electoral violence, and misinformation. Addressing the role of digital news outlets, the association stated that online media platforms carry a heightened responsibility to deliver credible reporting and encourage constructive public dialogue.
Reaffirming its commitment to ethical journalism and democratic governance, ACOE expressed optimism that Africa’s largest democracy would continue to navigate its current economic and social challenges to achieve its long-term potential.
