The Presidency has dismissed concerns regarding President Bola Tinubu’s health and whereabouts, confirming that the Nigerian leader is in good health and will return to the country this week to lead activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
Addressing criticism from opposition figures over the president’s absence from recent public events and the UN General Assembly in New York, presidential officials clarified that President Tinubu has been combining his scheduled annual leave with active official duties abroad.
Government representatives highlighted that the president has continued executive functions remotely while in Europe, citing recent high-level diplomatic and investment engagements in France—including discussions facilitating a $7 billion deep-sea port project in Ogun State.
The executive mansion also noted that President Tinubu’s decision to delegate Nigeria’s representation at UNGA to Vice-President Kashim Shettima aligned with international practice, pointing to similar arrangements by other African heads of state, including South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa and Egypt’s Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
President Tinubu is scheduled to land in Abuja ahead of the national anniversary on 1 October 2026. His itinerary includes attending the official premiere of a commemorative film honoring democratic icon MKO Abiola in Lagos alongside other independence anniversary proceedings.
