Nigeria and The Gambia have reaffirmed their strategic partnership, committing to deepen cooperation across key areas including security, justice reform, and institutional capacity building, following a high-level meeting between their foreign ministers in Abuja. Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, hosted his Gambian counterpart, Honourable Sering Modou Njie, who conveyed appreciation for Nigeria’s “consistent support,” particularly following The Gambia’s critical 2017 political transition.
The Gambian delegation highlighted Nigeria’s “pivotal role” in stabilising the country’s democracy and specifically commended the contribution and professionalism of Nigerian security personnel deployed to strengthen Gambian national defence capabilities. Drawing on his prior experience as Defence Minister, Mr. Njie underscored Nigeria’s central role in providing military training and logistical support to The Gambia’s armed forces.
A statement by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa said the ministers also reviewed preparations for the next Nigeria-Gambia Joint Commission, scheduled for early 2026, which they agreed would be a crucial platform to translate political goodwill into concrete outcomes across trade, education, and mutual security interests across West Africa.
