Abuja, Nigeria
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renewed the appointment of Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman of Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for a second five-year term.
The reappointment ensures that General Marwa, a respected former military officer and administrator, will remain at the helm of the anti-narcotics agency until 2031, providing continuity in the nation’s fight against drug trafficking and abuse.
Commended for Performance
The decision comes in recognition of the NDLEA’s significant operational successes since Marwa’s initial appointment in January 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
- Major Busts: During his first term, the agency reported the arrest of over 73,000 drug mules and barons and the seizure of more than 15 million kilogrammes of various hard drugs.
- Preventative Campaigns: The NDLEA also intensified nationwide campaigns, such as the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA), focusing on drug demand reduction.
President Tinubu commended Marwa, stating that the reappointment was a “vote of confidence in your onerous efforts to rid our country of the menace of drug trafficking and drug abuse.” The President urged him not to relent in “tracking the merchants of hard drugs, out to destroy our people, especially the young ones.”
Distinguished Background
General Marwa, who previously served as the military governor of Lagos and Borno States, brings decades of public service experience to the role.
He is a graduate of the Nigerian Defence Academy and holds two postgraduate degrees: a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University. Before his NDLEA role, he chaired the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse.
