The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following a screening session in the National Assembly.
Professor Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and Professor of Law at the University of Jos, was approved by the Senate after a voice vote conducted by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The confirmation follows his nomination by President Bola Tinubu to succeed the former INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
Screening and Clearance
Before the screening commenced, Senate President Akpabio informed the lawmakers that Professor Amupitan had been cleared by multiple security agencies, including the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Office of the Inspector-General of Police, which confirmed he has no criminal records.
Professor Amupitan’s session with the Senators focused on his vision for institutional reforms, ensuring credible elections, and plans for deepening the use of technology in Nigeria’s electoral process.
The new chairman is now tasked with leading the preparations for upcoming off-cycle governorship elections and laying the foundation for the crucial 2027 general elections. He was accompanied to the National Assembly by the Governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Ododo, and other dignitaries.
