Landmark vote gives Nigerian tech founders seats on national policy body

Nigeria’s burgeoning technology sector has secured direct representation on a key government body after the successful election of representatives to the National Council for Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship (NCDIE).

The NCDIE is the apex body established under the Nigeria Startup Act (NSA) to champion the growth and competitiveness of the country’s innovation agenda. The transparent voting process, coordinated by the Office for Nigerian Digital Innovation (ONDI), was confirmed in a statement signed by Hadiza Umar, Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations for the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

Four individuals were elected by the Startup Consultative Forum (SCF) to represent the voices of innovators across the country’s six geopolitical zones. The new council members are: Iyinoluwa Aboyeji (South West), Charles Uchenna Emembolu (South East), Abba Ibrahim Gamawa (North East), and Victoria Ojoagefu Manya (North Central).

This development is seen as a landmark for inclusive governance, as it marks the first time democratically elected startup leaders will sit alongside government agencies, regulators, and investors on the Council. Their direct participation is intended to ensure that grassroots innovators and digital entrepreneurs play an active role in shaping policies that directly affect Nigeria’s digital future and enhance trust between the government and the tech community.
