LAGOS — With the 2027 Nigerian electoral cycle appearing on the horizon, the campaign for Ndudi Godwin Elumelu (NGE) has signaled a formal start to its ground operations. The NGE Campaign Council announced on Friday a series of high-level consultations aimed at shoring up support within the critical Aniocha and Oshimili corridors of Delta State. The move is widely seen as a strategic play to consolidate a regional power base before the national political atmosphere reaches a fever pitch.
A Two-Pronged Strategy
In a statement released by the Council’s Secretary, Ogbueshi Chike Ifesiokwu, the group outlined a “two-phase engagement strategy.” The first phase will focus on the party’s “engine room”—the executive members—while the second will pivot to influential political kingmakers and community leaders.”These interactions are vital for ensuring a transparent and inclusive movement,” Mr. Ifesiokwu said, stressing that the goal is to build a “robust framework” for the upcoming political season.
The consultations are set to take place across four local government areas throughout March 2026.
Why This Matters
For an international audience, these local consultations are the “bread and butter” of Nigerian politics. Winning over local government party executives is often the first—and most difficult—hurdle for any candidate looking to secure a nomination and eventual victory. By moving early in the Aniocha and Oshimili regions, the Elumelu camp is attempting to create a “unified front” in a political landscape often defined by shifting loyalties and complex ethnic dynamics. The Council has urged all stakeholders to remain punctual, signaling a shift toward a more disciplined and organized campaign structure as the race for 2027 begins in earnest.
