Mob Attacks Nigerian Road Safety Office After Fatal Crash

An investigation has been launched after a mob attacked a road safety office in southern Nigeria following a fatal road accident. One officer from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and a truck driver died during the incident on Thursday at the Benin Toll Gate, along the busy Benin-Lagos expressway. The violence erupted after two trucks collided during a rescue operation. While FRSC personnel attempted to assist those involved, a crowd gathered and turned on the officers, vandalising the local unit command office.

Deeply Regrettable

The head of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, praised the Nigerian Army and police for their “swift and decisive intervention” in restoring order. In a statement, Mr Mohammed condemned the attack on his staff, who he said were carrying out their “lawful duty to save lives.””The attack on personnel and facilities of the Corps is deeply regrettable and unacceptable,” the statement read.

Key Details of the Incident:

The Crash: Two trucks collided near the Benin Toll Gate; one driver was killed instantly.

The Casualties: One FRSC officer died from injuries sustained during the subsequent mob attack; others remain in critical condition.

The Response: Security forces were deployed to prevent further escalation and protect the government facility. The FRSC has now ordered a full probe into both the cause of the initial crash and the circumstances that led to the violent mob action. Mr Mohammed assured the public that those responsible for the vandalism and assault would face justice.

Mob violence following road accidents is a recurring issue in parts of Nigeria, often fueled by spontaneous anger toward officials or drivers. The FRSC has called for calm and urged the public to remain supportive of road safety operations.
