Nigeria hails AFCON success as ‘vital’ tool for global diplomacy

Nigeria’s government has lauded the Super Eagles’ progress at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as a triumph for “cultural diplomacy,” saying the team’s success is enhancing the country’s image on the world stage.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the 2-0 quarter-final victory over Algeria was more than just a sporting win—it was a strategic boost to Nigeria’s “soft power.”

Football as a diplomatic tool

The ministry described football as a “vital pillar” of the nation’s foreign policy, used to project values of unity and resilience to the international community.

“Through football, Nigeria projects core national values… enhancing the country’s international image beyond conventional diplomatic engagement,” said ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa.

The government added that the players are acting as “cultural ambassadors,” fostering solidarity across Africa as they prepare for their semi-final clash against Morocco.

Private sector backing

The statement also highlighted the role of the private sector in supporting the team’s run in the tournament.

Nigerian billionaire Abdul-Samad Rabiu has pledged “substantial incentives” to the squad following their performance in Marrakech. The ministry welcomed the move, stating it underscored the “constructive role” of private citizens in building national cohesion and international goodwill.

Global outreach

As the Super Eagles move into the final four, Nigeria has instructed its diplomatic missions and diaspora communities worldwide to celebrate the achievement.

The Super Eagles’ AFCON journey so far:

  • Quarter-final: Nigeria 2-0 Algeria
  • Next match: Semi-final vs Morocco (Rabat, Wednesday 20:00 GMT)

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs concluded by stating that the “government and people of Nigeria stand firmly behind the Super Eagles” as they aim for their fourth continental title.
