Nigeria’s NNPC restores major gas pipeline after December blast

Nigeria’s state-owned oil firm, NNPC Limited, has announced that a critical gas pipeline is back in full operation following an explosion earlier this month.

The Escravos–Lagos Pipeline System (ELPS), which serves as a vital energy artery for the country’s industrial hubs and power plants, was damaged in an “unexpected” blast on 10 December in Warri, Delta State.

In a statement released on Monday, the company confirmed that the damaged section had been repaired, pressure-tested, and safely recommissioned in what it described as “record time.”

A boost for energy security

The restoration of the ELPS is a significant development for Nigeria’s energy sector. The pipeline is the primary network for transporting natural gas from the Niger Delta to the commercial capital, Lagos, and other parts of western Nigeria.

Interruptions to this line often lead to widespread power outages, as many of the country’s thermal power stations rely on its supply to generate electricity.

“Today, the pipeline is fully operational, reaffirming our resilience and commitment to energy security,” said Andy Odeh, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer.

Coordinated response

Following the blast three weeks ago, NNPC deployed multidisciplinary teams to contain the damage and begin repairs. The company credited the quick turnaround to several factors:

  • Host Community Support: Cooperation from local residents in the Delta region.
  • Regulatory Guidance: Oversight from industry watchdogs to ensure safety standards.
  • Security Vigilance: Protection of the site during the repair process.

Environmental commitment

The company emphasized that the repairs were conducted with a focus on “environmental stewardship” and safety.

“NNPC Limited remains steadfast in its pledge to protect our environment, safeguard our communities, and maintain the integrity and reliability of our assets,” Mr Odeh added.

While the cause of the December 10 explosion was not explicitly detailed in the statement, the successful recommissioning is expected to stabilize gas supply to industries and the national power grid as the new year approaches.
