Nigeria’s President Tinubu departs for Europe ahead of UAE summit

President Bola Tinubu has left Nigeria for a trip to Europe, where he will continue his end-of-year break before attending a major sustainability summit in the United Arab Emirates.

The President departed from Lagos on Sunday, 28 December, according to a statement from the presidency.

Following his stay in Europe, Mr Tinubu will travel to Abu Dhabi in early January at the invitation of the UAE President, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Focus on sustainable development

The primary purpose of the official leg of the trip is the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW).

The annual summit brings together global leaders from government and industry to discuss climate action and sustainable economic growth. This year’s theme, “The Nexus of Next: All Systems Go,” aims to bridge the gap between environmental ambition and practical action in finance and innovation.

President Tinubu’s participation comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to increase international investment in its energy and agricultural sectors.

Itinerary

  • Europe: The President is currently observing the remainder of his end-of-year holiday.
  • Abu Dhabi: He is expected to join other world leaders in the UAE in the first week of January.
  • Return: The presidency confirmed that Mr Tinubu will return to Nigeria following the conclusion of the summit.

The visit marks another step in the strengthening of diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the UAE, following recent discussions over visa regulations and bilateral trade agreements between the two nations.
