INEC Chairman Amupitan Backs Election Journalists with Book Launch Hosting

The Chairman of Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, has confirmed he will serve as the Chief Host at the launch of a significant new book chronicling the work of election journalists in the country.

Professor Amupitan accepted the invitation from Africa Eye News on Thursday during a meeting at the INEC headquarters in Abuja. The book, titled “The INEC Press Corps: Chronicles of Nigeria’s Election Journalists,” is authored by the Chairman of the INEC Press Corps, Segun Ojumu.

Demonstrating Media Commitment

The Chairman’s decision to headline the event is being viewed as a strong signal of his commitment to fostering a robust relationship with the media, which INEC regards as a vital partner in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic system.

The meeting where the commitment was made included INEC’s Head of Voter Education and Publicity, Mrs. Victoria Eta-Messi, and the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman, Mr. Dayo Oketola.

A Decade of Election Reporting

The book itself is noteworthy as it documents over a decade of experiences by journalists covering the Commission, spanning three Nigerian General Elections and numerous gubernatorial contests. It is the first time such accounts have been formally compiled and published, offering a unique historical insight into election coverage.

The launch, scheduled for Friday, 5 December 2025, at The Electoral Institute in Abuja, is expected to draw senior figures from INEC, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), the academic community, and major media outlets.
