Nigerian Politician Prince Bakinson Clarifies Senatorial Ambition, Cites Former Governor Amosun as Mentor

A prominent figure in Nigerian politics, Prince Kazeem Bakinson, has addressed mounting speculation regarding a potential bid for the Ogun Central Senatorial seat in the country’s upcoming general election, confirming he is still in a phase of ‘wide consultations’.

Prince Bakinson, the Aare Mayegun of Owu Kingdom and Convener of the Ajiboshin Platform, stated that while he is ’eminently qualified’ to run, his focus remains on his current responsibilities within the Lagos State Government.

Speaking to reporters in Abeokuta over the weekend, Bakinson, often referred to as Aare Kazeem Bakinson, clarified that contrary to social media rumours, he has not yet officially entered the race or resigned from his current position. He stressed the critical influence of former Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, on any eventual political decision, describing the former governor as a key mentor whose blessing is essential.”Senator Amosun is my mentor. If I decide to run for Senate in Ogun Central, he is one of the first people I must visit for consultation,” Bakinson stated. Bakinson also alluded to a potential internal political dynamic, adding, “I know I cannot contest against my uncle. It is either I step down for him or he step down for me.”Despite acknowledging that he meets all constitutional requirements for the role and is among the most qualified candidates, he reiterated that his immediate priority is service to the Lagos State Government.”I have not resigned, and my focus is to deepen the objectives of the Ajiboshin Platform,” he confirmed. The political decision, he noted, will be guided by respected figures across Owu, Abeokuta, and Nigeria, as well as his religious faith.”As a Muslim and someone who believes in Allah’s ways, if God says I should contest, I’ll give it all,” he said, emphasising the need for good representation in the Senate to attract “dividends of democracy.”

Bakinson concluded by affirming his constitutional eligibility and preparedness to offer quality representation should he eventually decide to contest.
