Nigeria: Over 2.5 Million Complete Voter Registration as Public Audit Nears

Abuja, Nigeria – Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the conclusion of the first phase of its nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, reporting that 2,572,054 citizens have fully completed their registration.

The first quarter of the CVR, which began in August 2025, will formally end on 10th December 2025. The focus now shifts to a crucial public audit of the voter register.

According to a statement issued by Mrs. Victoria Eta Messi, INEC’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, the figures include 1,503,832 online completions and 1,068,222 physical registrations as of 28th November 2025. Additionally, 9,891,801 citizens initiated the process through online pre-registration.

Public Verification Commences

In line with Section 19 of the country’s Electoral Act 2022, the Display of the Register of Voters for Claims and Objections will take place from 15th to 21st December 2025.

This week-long exercise will be held at all Local Government Offices where the CVR was conducted. INEC has urged the public, especially those who newly registered, transferred their voting locations, or updated their details, to actively participate.

The public verification period is designed to allow citizens to:

  • Verify the accuracy of their personal details.
  • Report errors found in the register.
  • Draw attention to any ineligible or deceased persons included on the list.

Next Steps

Registration activities in Anambra State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) remain suspended due to ongoing electoral activities, with new resumption dates to be communicated later.

INEC confirmed that the second phase of the nationwide CVR will resume on 5th January 2026, in line with previously released timelines.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a transparent and credible voter register as the nation works to strengthen its democratic processes.
