Newcastle, England
Manchester City’s Premier League title challenge suffered a significant blow on Saturday after they were defeated 2-1 by Newcastle United at St James’ Park, with forward Harvey Barnes scoring a decisive, albeit controversial, late brace.
The loss, City’s fourth in the league this season, leaves Pep Guardiola’s side in third place, four points adrift of leaders Arsenal, who face Tottenham on Sunday.
Barnes Seals Contentious Victory
The pivotal moments of the match occurred rapidly in the second half.
- Opener: Barnes put Newcastle ahead in the 64th minute, atoning for earlier misses by lashing a powerful low drive past City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma after an assist from Bruno Guimaraes.
- Instant Reply: City equalised just four minutes later when Rúben Dias converted from close range following a blocked shot by Bernardo Silva.
- Winner: Immediately following the equaliser, Barnes secured Newcastle’s victory. A sequence started by Nick Woltemade saw Guimaraes head against the bar, with the rebound falling to Barnes, who volleyed home. The goal was subject to a lengthy VAR check for a potential offside against Guimaraes, but the decision ultimately stood, sparking frustration for Guardiola.
Guardiola was also visibly aggrieved by several decisions in the first half, including a strong penalty appeal for a challenge on Phil Foden, which was waved away.
City’s Lack of Clinical Edge
The defeat squandered the momentum City had built before the international break. Despite a dominant period of possession, City were unusually profligate in front of goal.
Star striker Erling Haaland was notably kept off the scoresheet for only the third time this season across 21 matches for club and country. The forward, who has been in sensational form, squandered several chances, delaying his quest for his 100th league goal.
The victory marks only the second time Newcastle has beaten Manchester City in their last 36 league encounters, providing a major boost to manager Eddie Howe, who secured his first-ever top-flight win against Guardiola’s City.
