Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a strong warning regarding a forged document circulating online that falsely claims the postponement of a key regional primary election.
The electoral body clarified on Friday that it has not authorized any changes to the schedule for the Ekiti State governorship primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), one of the country’s major political parties. The controversy centres on a letter dated 10 November 2025, which has been widely shared on social media platforms. The document purported to show a resolution by the PDP leadership to delay their state congress and primary—the process used to select a candidate for the governorship.
However, in a statement released on 21 November, Victoria Eta-Messi, INEC’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, dismissed the correspondence as “fake.” “The said correspondence did not emanate from the office of the Secretary to the Commission, nor any official channel of INEC,” Mrs. Eta-Messi stated.
