Kogi State Governor Pays Tribute to Pioneer Council Boss Ozigi Maiyaki

Lokoja – The Governor of Nigeria’s Kogi State, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has expressed “profound shock” following the death of Ozigi Maiyaki, a pioneer local government leader and respected community elder.

Mr Maiyaki, who holds the distinction of being the first executive chairman of the Adavi Local Government Area, passed away at his home in Ogaminana early on Wednesday. He was 74.

A Political Pacesetter

A stalwart of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Maiyaki was a veteran politician whose career spanned decades. He first made history during Nigeria’s transition to the Third Republic, serving as the elected chairman of Adavi under the banner of the National Republican Convention (NRC) from 1991 to 1993.

In a statement released by his media aide, Ismaila Isah, Governor Ododo paid tribute to the late politician’s “enduring legacy,” describing him as a “pacesetter” whose early leadership defined the development path for the region, particularly in infrastructure and human empowerment.

Role in Recent Victory

Governor Ododo highlighted the personal role Mr Maiyaki played in his own political ascent, revealing that the late chairman was one of the first leaders he consulted during his campaign for the governorship in 2023.

“I recalled that Adayi Ozigi Asema was among the first political leaders I visited for consultation… his wise counsels and support were part of the processes that led us to victory in the election,” the Governor stated.

He added that the late leader’s support would be “dearly missed,” urging the people of Adavi and the bereaved family to find comfort in the record of service he leaves behind.

Mr Maiyaki remained politically active until his passing.
