Nigeria’s Defence Minister Vows Action After Kebbi School Abduction

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has condemned the recent attack on a girls’ boarding school in Kebbi State and called for the immediate rescue of the students abducted during the raid. In a statement released on Monday, the Minister strongly criticised the night-time assault on the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS) in Maga, located in the Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of the Zuru Emirate. The attack, carried out by armed bandits, resulted in casualties and mass abductions

The school’s Vice Principal, Malam Hassan Makuku, was killed during the raid. Mr. Matawalle offered condolences to the family of the late Vice Principal.

Abduction: Police earlier confirmed that 25 students were taken from the school hostel.

Call for Urgent Rescue

Mr. Matawalle described the incident as “unacceptable” and stated that the government, under President Bola Tinubu, has ordered an immediate and decisive security response.”The government, led by President Bola Tinubu, GCFR, has directed that the state’s security apparatus swing into immediate action to ensure the abducted students are released unharmed,” the Minister said. He urged all security agencies to work “urgently and in concert” to locate and secure the safe release of the students and to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice. The Minister also appealed to residents of the affected communities to “remain calm” and to support the efforts of the security forces as they address the volatile situation. This attack is the latest in a worrying trend across Nigeria’s north-western region, where criminal gangs known as ‘bandits’ frequently target schools for mass kidnappings for ransom.
