Nigeria’s Super Eagles Advance in World Cup Qualifiers with Extra-Time Thriller

Rabat, Morocco

Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured a dramatic 4-1 victory over the Panthers of Gabon after extra time on Thursday to progress to the next playoff stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Star striker Victor Osimhen netted a late double to seal the emphatic win at the Stade Mohammed V in Rabat, Morocco.

Extra Time Decides Contest

The match remained tightly contested through the first 90 minutes. After a goalless first half, Akor Adams broke the deadlock early in the second half, giving Nigeria the lead after capitalising on a defensive error.

However, Gabon fought back, scoring an equaliser just four minutes before the end of regular time, forcing the crucial encounter into an additional 30 minutes.

The Super Eagles took control in extra time:

  • Chidera Ejuke restored Nigeria’s advantage with a composed finish.
  • Victor Osimhen then extended the lead, netting twice to put the result decisively beyond Gabon’s reach.

Nigeria’s defence, anchored by Benjamin Frederick and Calvin Bassey, successfully contained Gabon’s late attempts to mount a comeback.

Path to the World Cup

The victory moves Nigeria one step closer to securing a berth at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Super Eagles had secured their spot in the runners-up playoff stage following a dominant run in the African qualifiers, which included a decisive 4-0 win over the Benin Republic. Gabon had qualified by finishing second in Group F behind Ivory Coast.

Nigeria will now face the winner of the upcoming match between Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo on November 16. The victor of that final African playoff tie will then advance to the inter-continental playoff for a final chance at securing a World Cup spot.
