The government of Kogi State in North Central Nigeria has approved a draft budget estimate of over ₦820 billion for the 2026 fiscal year, marking a significant increase over the previous year.
The draft budget, approved by the State Executive Council, totals ₦820,490,585,443, representing a 35.7 per cent increase over the revised 2025 budget. The proposal is titled ‘Budget of Shared Prosperity: Driving Sustainable Growth for All.’
Capital Expenditure and Fiscal Strategy
The budget plan prioritises capital expenditure, allocating ₦459.82 billion (56% of the total) towards projects in infrastructure, health, education, and agriculture. Recurrent expenditure, covering personnel costs and debt servicing, accounts for the remaining ₦360.67 billion.
The State Governor, Ahmed Ododo, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive development and economic expansion.
According to the Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Asiwaju Asiru Idris, the fiscal strategy focuses on strengthening the state’s revenue base, promoting public-private partnerships (PPP), and improving the ease of doing business.
Mitigating Economic Shocks
The 2026 plan also targets measures to mitigate the economic impact of the removal of fuel subsidies by the federal government. This includes prioritising social protection programmes, rural development, and support for small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs).
The Commissioner noted that the draft was developed through an inclusive process involving town hall meetings and stakeholder engagements to ensure citizens’ needs are reflected.
The estimates are expected to be presented to the State House of Assembly by Governor Ododo for consideration and approval in the coming weeks.
