Nigerian Governor Oyebanji confirmed as APC consensus candidate for 2026

Governor Biodun Oyebanji has been formally confirmed as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State, following a consensus affirmation exercise held on Monday.

The endorsement saw 885 delegates from the state’s 16 local government areas affirm Mr. Oyebanji’s candidacy for a second term.

The path to consensus was cleared after the only other cleared aspirant, Atinuke Omolayo, voluntarily withdrew her candidacy. The special nomination congress, supervised by a committee led by Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo, ratified the decision in Ado-Ekiti.

Unity and Political Maturity

In his acceptance speech, Governor Oyebanji expressed profound gratitude, dedicating his nomination to God and acknowledging the support of delegates and party leaders, including President Bola Tinubu.

He described the event as a “historic moment in our political development”, signalling a new level of political maturity and unity within the APC.

“The decision to make me the consensus candidate for a second time is unprecedented,” Governor Oyebanji said, adding that the party’s stakeholders have closed ranks and promoted peace ahead of the 2026 contest.

The motion to ratify his nomination was moved by Senate Leader and party stalwart, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, and seconded by the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly.

Former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi also backed the outcome, describing the adoption of Oyebanji as a reflection of “unity and maturity” within the party.
