INEC wraps up Anambra readiness tour, Chairman appoints Chief Press Secretary

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared that Anambra State is fully prepared to conduct the governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025.

The announcement follows a week-long readiness assessment tour across the state by a high-level delegation from the commission’s headquarters. The team, led by Professor Rhoda Gumus, National Commissioner for Election Planning and Monitoring, concluded its visit after inspecting facilities, logistics, and security arrangements.

New Spokesperson Appointed

In a related development, the new INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, has approved the appointment of veteran journalist Mr. Adedayo Eriye Oketola as his Chief Press Secretary.

Mr. Oketola, an award-winning journalist and former editor, assumes the role at a critical time when effective media engagement is key to the commission’s commitment to transparency ahead of the crucial governorship election.

Final Preparations Underway

The INEC delegation’s tour confirmed that Anambra is ready. The team conducted comprehensive checks across various Local Government Areas, monitoring the batching of non-sensitive materials and the ongoing Permanent Voter Card (PVC) collection exercise.

During interactions, the commission stressed the need for strict adherence to accountability and the tracking of all election materials. The readiness mission also included a meeting with the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), where security chiefs pledged intensified and coordinated patrols to ensure peaceful, credible elections.

The Mock Accreditation Exercise confirmed the seamless operation of the upgraded Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), leading one National Commissioner to declare the commission “99% ready.”
