Nigerian Military Foils Drug Movement in Nasarawa State

Akwanga, Nigeria — Troops from the Nigerian military’s anti-crime campaign, Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS), have intercepted a vehicle conveying a large quantity of suspected hard drugs during a routine stop-and-search operation in Nasarawa State.

The interception occurred on October 14, 2025, near Anguwan Malama in the Akwanga Local Government Area. The report detailing the operation was issued by Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu, the Acting Media Information Officer for the joint task force.

The military stated that upon sighting the checkpoint, the driver of the ash-coloured Toyota Solara immediately abandoned the vehicle and fled into the nearby bush, evading arrest despite a swift pursuit by the soldiers. A thorough search of the car, which had a Lagos registration number, uncovered several bags of substances suspected to be marijuana.

The recovered vehicle and the drugs are currently in military custody and are expected to be transferred to appropriate law enforcement agencies for further investigation.

Major General Moses Gara, the Force Commander for Operation WHIRL STROKE, commended the troops for their “vigilance, resilience, and professionalism.” He reaffirmed the operation’s commitment to denying criminal elements freedom of action and ensuring continued safety across Benue, Nasarawa, and Taraba States.
